Mr. L Driving to Work

Practice Problem

1.

Mr. Lehmann was driving to work this morning. Before coming to HMS he drove 300 meters in 40 seconds to Dunkin' Donuts for his morning coffee and plain bagel with cream cheese toasted. He stayed at Dunkin' Donuts for 3 minutes. He then proceeded toward the highway 400 meters away. This took 1 minute. He then got on the highway for 5 minutes traveling a distance of 9 kilometers. All of a sudden Mr. Lehmann was stuck behind an oil truck, an 18 wheeler, and a little old lady for 8 minutes and the last 4 highway kilometers until the Willington exit. Since he was late he floored it and he traveled 3 kilometers in 1 minute to arrive at HMS.

Directions:

Create a distance/time graph that graphs the story portrayed above.

Solution:

Time (X)

Distance (Y)

40 seconds

300 meters

40+180 = 220 seconds

300+0 meters = 300 meters

40+180+60 = 280 seconds

300+0+400 = 700 meters

40+180+60+300 = 580 seconds

300+0+400+9000 = 9700 meters

40+180 +60 +300+480 = 1060 seconds

300+0+400+9000+4000 = 13700meters

40+180+60+300+480+60 = 1120 seconds

300+0+400+9000+4000+3000 = 16700 meters
